how do i unlock my passcode if i was not the previous owner?

I have this new work phone that came from a previous employee that will not give me the code to unlock the phone. How do i unlock the phone without the previous passcode?

If it’s the passcode:

If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

But if it’s the employee’s Apple ID and password, then the iPhone is Activation Locked and can never be unlocked without that information.

If it’s a work phone, have the business retrieve the original purchasing paperwork with the serial number, and management can then have a discussion directly with Apple.
