iPad recovery mode

iPad is in recovery mode and is asking to connect it to the computer. I put a brand new charger in it to try and connect to my MacBook Air but it is not working. The device will charge in an outlet, but it is t recognizing being placed in a Mac. I’m just trying to restore it. And, before I placed it in recovery mode, the screen said the device was disabled and to press the home button to unlock but the hone button isn’t letting me unlock the device. Someone please help.
