iPad vs chromebook for student

My son (12) is accustomed to using a chromebook for school. He needs a new one and we are considering an iPad instead. **Is there any reason that the iPad would not be just as good?** Would need to easily run Fortnite (they said at least 60 fps or something like that?!), Zoom, Google apps (classroom, drive, etc). **If so, which version (and what memory size) would I need? **Id hate to spend the $$ on the Pro if its not needed.** TIA!

A few things:

  1. A Chromebook is essentially the Google equivalent of the iPad, but with a built in keyboard and trackpad. Zoom, Google apps, etc work fine.
  2. The base model should be fine, but you could go for the Air if you want a little more performance.
  3. The school said he needs to be able to run Fortnite? It will run fine on an iPad (in fact, it was released for iOS first), but a school requesting it is a little weird.
  4. An iPad is typically more expensive than a Chromebook, but is often better hardware and materials.
