file sharing

i set file sharing so everyone can "read & write" on my imac (high sierra) but when i close the window and try to access it from my macbook (catalina) the permissions revert to "read only" and all i see when i connect is a file icon. clicking on it gives me a message "There is no application set to open the document “Macintosh HD”.

am i missing something?

thanks.

Hello KatDeB,

We understand that you're using file sharing so everyone using your Mac can read and write but when you close the window and try to access it the permissions revert back to read only. We're happy to help!

Below is the article for file sharing on your Mac. Take a look at the steps and see if it was set up to be the way you wanted it to be.

Share files with others who use your Mac

We also want to provide you with the article for changing permissions.

Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac

thanks for the tips on file sharing but they really aren't a solution for me. i often want to check out a document on my imac while using my macbook pro. if i have to physically walk to the imac, log in, find the document and then place it in a shared folder, that defeats the purpose of remotely accessing the imac. when i access the macbook from the imac, i have no problem seeing everything (same with the mac minnie). but when i try to access the imac from the macbook, all i see are folders. i need to know how to make the "read and write" permissions permanent on the imac.
