HomePod Personal Requests Fail Regularly

I have four HomePods around my house. Although Recognize My Voice and Personal Requests are alway enabled in Apple Home, Siri regularly asks Who Is Speaking despite Require Authentication being set to Never.

To attempt to resolve I have:

Triple checked the settings in Apple Home

Checked for the latest updates

Logged out and back in to iCloud

Factory Reset 4 HomePods

Restarted the iOS device associated with Apple Home (iPad 5th generation)

Factory reinstalled the iPad

These attempts have failed Help?

Hey John Dwight,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We understand you have some questions about using HomePod. We're happy to provide some information to help.

Sounds like you've covered a lot of great steps to resolve this, so awesome job there! We also want to make sure you've worked through the information in the resource below for steps to take if Siri doesn't recognize you. Also, please note if there is someone in the house that may sound similar, that could be why Siri is asking for confirmation.

Use multiuser on HomePod

Thanks again, and have a great day!

Thank you. I’m the only user of my HomePods, so I ignored the Multi User Help page on Apple Support. I’ll give it a go. The problem meanwhile has inconsistently persisted. This is new: Siri several times asked me to turn on my Location on iOS device. Checking that setting I saw that the pad’s Location was set correctly. Being able to set Reminders or check Messages through HomePod is an awesome addition to my life, and I miss that functionality. It may be that I have to make my iPhone the primary iOS device for HomePod. I don’t allow phone functionality on the iPad-maybe this is a clue.

I have made progress with Siri and HomePod. Some of the times Siri fails to recognize me has been due to my being too far away from the device. Now I make my personal request from much closer to the pod. First, though, I ask Siri is she recognizes me. If she says Yes then we’re good to go. There are still anomalous times where I haven’t been recognized. I have checked the Home app to find that somehow my personal requests settings have been set to Off for some of my pods. I turn them back on and things work fine.
