Error message at startup

My MacBook suddenly stopped working I had put it down and when I open it back up I noticed it was glitching so I did a hard reboot. Once it started back up I first started seeing the infamous prohibitory symbol. I tried all the tricks of getting it to start up and if I finally got it to the disk utility page but now it has a flashing folder. I tried to repair the disks but now it says failure on that too?
