I currently have over 130 GB stored on iCloud Drive and I want to take regular backups of all the documents, like I do on ordinary hard disks. So far I’ve not been able to get an answer, not even from Apple customer support, so I might think that it's not possible.
Any suggestions / explanations?

You can create a backup by keeping a full non-optimised copy of the iCloud Drive on a computer, most backup utilities including Time Machine will be able to back this up to an external drive.

Do you have any tips or links with instructions on how I create a «full non-optimized» copy on my Mac?
(I have tried to make a backup directly from the folder, but it only copies about 10%).

Yes, simply turn optimisation off.
System Preferences ➔ Apple ID ➔ Optimise Mac Storage ➔ Off
