Apple TV app giving "This monitor does not support HDR playback", on an ASUS PB287Q 4k display

Hi community

I'm trying to watch a film I've downloaded (in SD, not even HD) using Apple TV app on my Macbook Pro 2019. It's running 10.15.5 so should not be suffering from the software issue that I have read previously generated this error.

I've tried connecting the Macbook Pro to an HDMI capable TV last night (Panasonic plasma) and got this error. Thought it might be the TV not being capable, so tried it tonight on my ASUS PB287Q, which is a native 4k display.

It's connected via Displayport with a display port to USB C adapter and I'm *still* getting Apple TV say that "this monitor does not support HDR playback".

How can this be when the monitor is a 4K monitor?

Okay, thanks. I tried the HDMI port on the monitor (rather than displayport) with no success.

Frankly, it's all too hard and if apple TV means buying new hardware because it's not going to display sub HDR content unless the TV can display in HD, it's not worth bothering with.

Thanks for your help. Way too much being spent on adapters and cables every time a new macbook has to be bought!

Hello JP24,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re having trouble with your external display connected to your Mac. We’re happy to help.

To start, try the steps in the article below. You may want to specifically make sure you’re using the right adapters:

Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Should the issue persist, refer to the section labeled “Get more help.”

Take care.

Hi bailier

No, my external 4K display connects and works perfectly with my Macbook Pro 2019 and displays in high resolution.

What doesn't work is when I try to use it to display Apple TV from the TV+ app which says that it is does not support HDR playback. Which it does. Therefore Apple TV will only play on the laptop screen and not on external displays.

This display is connected and working with my existing USB-C to Displayport adapter okay, so the help page wasn't of much help.

When I click on the 'support' link under get more help, I get a 404 page not found error, so that wasn't particularly useful either.

I'm only trying to play an SD piece of content as well anyway via Apple TV.
