Night Shift Color Temperature Behaviour

The slider on my Mac's "Color Temperature" continues to adjust color even when Night Shift is turned off.

Here's what's happening:

1. Schedule: set to "Off"

2. Manual: unchecked

3. Color Temperature still affects display color

I would have assumed that with 1 and 2 that 3 would not occur, but it does.

I don't recall this happening in the past. It seems to me that 3 did not occur when 1 and 2 were set as they are here.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you

With Night Shift set to Off you can still operate the temperature slider and see the effect the colour temperature has on the display but on releasing the slider it will default to the native colour temp the display has been set to.

When you have Schedule set to Off and Manual On then you should be able to see the different colour temperatures as you move the slider but on release the temperature chosen should stick. When you do this does the temperature of the screen go back to its default.

If none of this is happening then it leads me to thinking that the system preferences preference file has become corrupted.

In Finder click on Go in the menubar and select Go To Folder and type in this text.

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

press Go

A new Finder window will open with the file highlighted.

move the file to the Trash. Do not empty the Trash.

Restart your mac, open System Preferences> Displays> Night Shift

and see if there is a change in behaviour.

If Night Shift is working how you expect it to then you can empty the Trash.

You may now need to go through all your System Preferences to set them up

as you had before.

Other people have mentioned problems with Night Shift and in solving their

problem they had neglected to mention they were running other apps that can

alter the colour temperature of their display, such as Flux or Night Owl.

Thanks for your response. I'm puzzled by what you say:

"Being able to adjust the slider is expected whether the Night Shift option is selected"

If that is the case, then Night Shift seems to serve no function, and Apple contradicts this idea in their own words here:

"Drag the slider to make the color temperature more or less warm when Night Shift is on."

But in my case, dragging the slider makes the color temperature more or less warm when Night Shift is off (or on)

Perhaps even more perplexing is another statement that Apple makes:

"Night Shift automatically shifts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the color spectrum after dark"

(source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207513)

But, again, it seems to be the case that this adjustment happens not automatically, but only manually. When I activate Night Shift there is no discernible difference whatsoever, regardless of whether I adjust manually or by schedule Night Shift to come on.

Thanks again for your response. I'm not sure if I explained my issue clearly, so I'll just outline the steps of what I'm doing, and the affects I'm seeing (or not seeing)

  1. Schedule is set to "Off"
  2. Manual left unchecked
  3. (Steps 1 & 2 indicate to me that Night Shift is "off")
  4. I adjust the slider all the way to the left – to "Less Warm" (and can see, as expected, a difference in the display)
  5. I then select "Manual" – which indicates to me that Night Shift is now "on" and therefore should affect a visible difference in my display
  6. I see no difference in my display whatsoever – the display remains visually identical as it was at step 3 (when Night Shift was "off")
  7. Therefore, though Night Shift is now "on" I see no visual difference, hence I cannot conclude that Night Shift is working. There is no appreciable affect on my display whether Night Shift is "off" or "on"

I can do the same steps, but at step #4 I adjust the slider all the way to the right – to "More Warm" – and the result is the same: (i.e., though Night Shift is now "on" I see no visual difference, hence I cannot conclude that Night Shift is working).

I've also experimented by setting the Schedule to five minutes ahead of the present time: and can see no visual difference once the time indicated in the Schedule has arrived: my display remains exactly as it was before the scheduled time arrives.

I hope that explains what I'm encountering.

Hello.

Thanks for your response. I tried as you suggested, but unfortunately, my slider setting does not default to the native color temperature of the display, but stick to the color associated with whatever position I have left the slider at (with Night Shift set to Off).

I am not using Flux or Night Owl. But after running the command you provided, I recalled that I did have a similar application installed "Brightness Slider" but I uninstalled it and re-ran the plist command to no avail.

Thanks anyway.

You can always install without making a backup, but it does beg the question why are you not making backups on a regular basis. Do you not think it is a good idea to keep backups of your data, because one day your macs HD will fail or your mac will fail, or the power will fail when you are doing something important, lightning strikes, burglars nick your mac or just plain and simple screw up.

It sounds like you have an issue with the Color Temperature slider still adjusting when Night Shift is turned off. Being able to adjust the slider is expected whether the Night Shift option is selected.

However, if the slider is moving on its own we recommend taking a look at this article with steps to follow for How to use safe mode on your Mac. This will perform checks and stop certain software from starting up automatically. Once you are in safe mode, test to see if you have the same issue.

Also, check out this article with steps for How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac to create a new user and test the issue in the new account to see if the issue is user specific or system wide.

So no difference after deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist and restarting and trying NightShift again.

Did you you type the full path I gave you, that path takes you to the Users/<Home>/Library/Preferences

which is hidden by default.

The main (visible) Library/Preferences folder has its own com.apple.systempreferences.plist but that is not the one that controls Night Shift.

I would consider reinstalling macOS Mojave, just install it over what you have,

make a full backup first though.

Open Safari, do not use Firefox and click on this link,

How to upgrade to macOS Mojave - Apple Support

Go to Section 4 and click on Get macOS Mojave

This will redirect you to the App Store Mojave download page.

It should say Get or Download.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ then it is detecting a previous download of the install app

go to the Applications folder locate Install macOS Mojave.app.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart, click on the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

Yes, I'm fully aware that I can install without backup. It has been my displeasure to do so once already in the past – though the displeasure was relatively mild. As long as I can access my Dropbox files, whatever else I lose is largely inconsequential.

As per "begging the question" (a phrase which doesn't actually mean what you intend it to mean, but refers instead to the Aristotelian notion of "informal fallacy") – I've been pretty lucky in my 18 plus years of Apple usage, but their products seem to be decreasing in their stability. But perhaps this instability is due more to the changes in computing tout court – rather than any shortcoming in Apple's products. Whatever the case, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to justify both their high purchase price and their usage in general. Their motto used to be "It just works" – and indeed that was the case formerly. Not so much any more.

I'll likely get an external drive some day. If only the good lord had decided to give us 25 hours in a day rather than the relatively paltry 24 – then I would have the time to do so.
