Enable family sharing when no apple device is available

I do not own a new enough apple device that will allow access to these settings. How can I setup family sharing to use Apple tv in this case?

So as I understand it... (forgive me, the Apple-verse confuses me at times)

  • Sharing my Apple ID with family will allow them to access the Apple Original content available through Apple TV. I get this, it makes sense. Sharing an ID, even locked down is not something I care to do. Why the Family Sharing appealed.
  • I understand other content may incur other costs (Disney+, etc). I currently subscribe to others that have profiles for individuals.
  • If family is borrowing my ID to watch programs, I will get plenty of grief when I update my password on a somewhat regular basis.

I may not keep this service as without a means of sharing that does not involve letting someone borrow my locked down (features secured, etc) account, I am not comfortable. It is something that makes my skin crawl for a lack of a better description. Potentially too may things tied to the ID in this case. My other subscriptions there isn't really much in the way of purchases that can be made.

My goal was that others in my household could use the Apple TV service using their Apple IDs as what I read / understood. I did not realize that I would have to have an Apple device to enable sharing. In this case, it becomes far to pricey a venture. I want my kids to be able use the Apple TV service on their Apple devices. There is only 1 TV in the house using the Apple TV app via Fire stick.

I can't see purchasing a device just to setup sharing. And in my understanding, me signing in with my Apple ID to one of their devices is probably not the best thing to do. I have liked what I have watched so far and would like to share it with them.

Apple TV can be used with AirPlay to play content from a device or computer, or if you set up Home Sharing it can access any active libraries of computers on the same local network set up with the same Apple ID. The Apple TV can also access the purchase history of the user that sets it up. Family Sharing comes into play when you have an existing family group that have made purchases as these may be accessed via {Media Type} > Purchased > Family Sharing > {Member}. Apple TV cannot be used to create or accept invitations for family sharing.

I understand AirPlay can be used with Apple TV and how Home Sharing is intended to work... However, I do not own an Apple device to set these up. I am using the Apple TV app on a Fire TV stick and would like to setup sharing so that my kids (teens) can access the programming... How can I do so without an Apple Mac or iOS device? Can it be accomplished through the Apple ID login on my PC? I setup my Apple TV subscription using Chrome on my non-Apple phone.

Just make sure purchases are set up so they need a password, and there should be no issue.

The Apple TV app on 3rd party devices is limited to access to the iTunes store and AppleTV+ subscription services.

There's nothing more the Firestick can access.

You can also set up Parental Controls on the Firestick.

Can my Apple ID be signed in on their devices so they can use the Apple TV service? I did see there there can be multiple IDs signed in to the Apple TV app on the Fire stick but I interpret that as each of those IDs would be separate Apple TV plan subscriptions. Is that not correct? It would be nice if my kids could use it while away at school and not worry about it as an added expense for them. That is one of my primary hopes I have for using the Family Sharing.

Yes, Signing in with your Apple ID on the FireStick would make your Apple TV+ subscription available to be used on the FireStick.

Do note, that the AppleTV+ subscription only covers Apple's Original content. Movies and shows from other producers or studios would not be free. They would still need to be purchased or rented normally and paid for, which is why I suggested password protecting purchases. So they don't run up a bill on items not covered by the subscription.

You only mentioned the FireStick. Not other devices your family owns. No other devices need your Apple ID if all you want to is to provide access to the Fire Stick. You aren't really sharing your ID. Your simply signing in yourself with your Apple ID on the FireStick.

They don't need to have your password, and they don't have access to anything else.

Outside of other channels, the iTunes Store content, such as movies and Tv shows not part of the TV+ lineup will incur other costs.

Yes, you would need to update the password on the Firestick each time you update.

Not sure what you think is going to happen with your Apple ID really. Its just there to access the subscription. They can't do anything else with it.

Your other option is to buy a cheap used Apple device like an iPod Touch and manage Family sharing from there.

But that comes with its own set of issues.
