When I try to edit basic 1080P footage 5 minutes on my new MacBook Pro Catalina every time I do anything (literally) I get the beachball for several seconds. I have closed all other applications, media is on a separate drive, turned off scrubbing all to no avail. Please help me

This is a known problem with that machine. There are multiple threads with more than a hundred posts. If you just bought the machine I would recommend you return it.
There was a post that said this might be fixed in the macOS 10.15.6 update. Have you tried that?
Yes, installed after losing several hours. Fcp works better now. I'm not impressed with Apple. That an £1700 top of the range 13 macbook Pro could not run their own flagship software. Ho hum. Anyway auto update off and onwards!! Thanks for the help.
