install mojave in external ssd

Can I install Mojave in an external ssd in a 16 inch. MBP 2019 Catalina? I have tried the installer but get the scary message: The version of MacOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled ... Don't want a downgrade of the MBP, just the chance to run Mojave from an external ssd.

That MBP should have come with Catalina installed which means you cannot run Mojave on it. You can't run a version of macOS earlier than what it shipped with.

You would have to create a Mojave VM using Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtulBox.

Any Mac with a T2 chip requires special setup to boot from an external device

But that assumes your Mac will run the older macOS version. However, going forward, you may have a situation where you want to boot from a clone, or maybe you have moved to Big Sur and want to boot from an external Catalina. So the above web site may still be useful to you.

So, if I have an old app, lets say ProTools, I used to run it on an external ssd with El Capitan OS in my 2013 Mac pro I sold, that means I cannot use it anymore 'cause my new MBP doesn't allow me to... or... if I install in a Parallels Desktop El Capitan OS and there my old version of Protools It will run as it did in an external El Capitan OS running in my 2013 Mac Pro? (sorry, I'm not to advanced in these things)
