Apple TV Full Screen Black Flicker On 2020 MacBook Air

I recently picked up 2020 Air and love it completely. Since new, I've had an issue with choppy, black screen flickering when trying to watch a show/movie in the Apple TV app. It ONLY happens in full screen and it doesn't happen at any other time with any other full window usage (YouTube, Prime, etc). Is this just some sort of Apple TV glitch? What's the fix for it? It makes watching anything on Apple TV completely impossible and the app on the MacBook Air useless.

Hi maidenfan84,

Thanks for your post! We understand your MacBook Air will not produce a consistent image when in full screen mode using the Apple TV app. If you haven't already, restart your machine and perform any available macOS update.

If the issue is persisting, delete the Apple TV app, then reinstall.

If the issue is persisting, see if the issue is replicated in another user.

Let us know what you find out!

Take care!

On my Mabook Air 2020 I had this problem too. I've solved it by disable the option 'Optimize video streaming while on battery power' at the 'Energy Safer' settings in macOS 10.15.6. I did not need to restart, but it can help if it doesn't work yet. Maybe connecting the MacBook Air to the power adapterwhile streaming may also help. Other tips to reduce flickering can be; downloading the video before watching instead of streaming, disable 'True Tone' and 'Night Shift' during streaming or video playback in general.

I had exactly the same problem and ended up returning the computer for a refund. The full screen video issue also happens with Quick Time Player, but not with the black flickering, but rather with colorful artifacts that pop up all the time. These issues are only on full screen. Since customer support was unable to fix them or tell me why these issues were happening, and failed to follow through with multiple phone calls scheduled with me, I returned my computer. I would love to know when this is resolved so I can feel safe purchasing the computer again.

Hello and thank you for the reply! I have tried all of those suggestions up above and still has the same problem. When I went to try to delete the Apple TV app, it won't let me. There's no X next to it to allow deletion and it also does not allow to be dragged to the trashcan. One thing I've noticed is that it only has the black choppy picture when actually streaming a show or movie. I've tried watching the trailers for the show/movies and that does NOT have any issue.

Lucky for us it is no hardware problem :-) I think the energy consumsion is regulated different when the option is enabled and causes some instability in the render or buffer process or videocard performance. I wonder if it still happens when the video is already downloaded and streaming is not required. Happy to read it work out well for you too. Maybe in 10.11 this will work in a better way.

I just checked the full screen video while using Quicktime and I, too, am having the same problems you are. So it seems full screen on Apple TV and full screen on Quicktime are some major issues that need to be fixed. Since it doesn't happen any other times, it seems like a Catalina / software glitch. Very disappointing, to say the least. At this point, not sure I'll be purchasing anymore computer products from Apple again. Before this Air, I purchased one of the 2020 Pros. Had to return it TWICE because both models had speakers that would pop and crackle. Now, this Air with its flickering and artifacts. Not too happy about it.

I still need to give it some more time to play with, but I quickly tried what you suggested. I usually keep it plugged in and the flickering won't happen. Soon as I unplug it, it'll flicker and will continue to flicker even if I plug back into the charger. It'll only go away once I restart the computer. I tried to uncheck the box for the optimizing...it didn't flicker unplugged or plugged in. Just to see what would happen, I unplugged it and turned the box back on...it started flickering. I plugged it back in, kept flickering. I then unchecked the box once again...flicker went away. You are awesome, geo75! I wonder why it would cause that reaction having it on, perhaps it's a bug that never got fixed?
