MacBook Pro Stops Charging Suddenly

Since I'm working from home since coronavirus started, I usually leave my computer plugged into the charger for most, if not all, of the day. Recently I've noticed that it will sometimes stop charging and run the battery all the way down, even when it is still plugged in. I have to put the charger in several times to get it to begin charging again--I haven't found a consistent way to easily fix this. I got my computer new in late 2019 and the battery is otherwise fine. What could be causing this? Should I just stop leaving it on the charger all day?

I apologize for my slow reply - this is a 2019 13" MacBook Pro with Touchbar. I'm currently running Mojave (version 10.14.6).

Verify your battery condition, holding the Option key and clicking open the BATT icon in the upper right menu bar; anything but Condition : Normal needs service.

For resetting battery management—Try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

If your USB-C power adapter isn't charging your Mac notebook

Also this is a curious HT worth a try(?)

If your MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) keeps shutting down

You battery will never overcharge—100% on the mains is not an issue.

Leaving your MacBook Pro on the charger and charging all day is NOT a problem. Many of us do this without issues.

Try the following actions one at a time and check whether the issue is resolved after each time.

  1. Reset SMC by following the directions applicable to your MacBook here ➔ How to Reset SMC. If that does not solve things then-
  2. Reset NVRAM/PRAM by following the directions applicable to your MacBook here ➔ How to Reset NVRAM/PRAM.

Thanks! The battery condition is normal, which makes sense--it's still charging all the way and staying charged most of the time, the problem is just that it occasionally stops charging. I reset the SMC the other day and the problem has continued. I reset NVRAM this morning as suggested above, I haven't had any problems yet but it's pretty unpredictable so it could just be a coincidence.

Based on the first link, I think the problem might be with my USB-C cord. Is there any way to test this without another charging cord and without going into an Apple store?

This is the concerning part "stop charging and run the battery all the way down"

You do not have to go to an Apple Store—online purchase USB-C Charge Cable (2 m) - Apple

as well as BestBuY® has a liberal return policy if you purchase and return after testing if no change.
