Leaving a device plugged in all night will not harm it ordinarily. Charging stops once the battery is at capacity. You can leave an iPhone plugged in for days or weeks if you want to.

So by far the most likely cause of the damage was water intrusion causing a short or corrosion.

Are you seeking to be perceived as honorable and trustworthy and responsible? if so, then you just got to pay for repair or replacement. Even if you hypothetically didn’t cause it—though I suspect the dunking did cause this.

It doesn't really matter though, as your action was proximate to the damage. You’re going to get the blame.
