Unable to login for incorrect accent on a letter

Hi, I recently started to encounter a problem while login in my Mac Book pro.

I changed my password a few days ago and it always worked fine but yesterday morning it started to show some issues.

My new password contains a “à” in the final part. I’m using an Italian keyboard to input my password but now when I press on the “à” it gave me another symbol. I tried to simply add the accent using “alt(option) + the letter corresponding to that accent” but instead of adding the correct accent it just add two signs (two dots instead of one, as it does with “é”). Unfortunately my Mac isn’t connected to a wifi source so is unabled to reset the password using apple ID and I can’t use the “restoring “ mode cause my screen is cracked and the screen I use as a seconde one it stay grey when I enter that mode.

I hope you can help me because I really need to log in for job purposes.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Can you tell us exactly what that symbol is, or type it here? That way we might be able to guess if another input source is active.

If by chance it has become US instead of Italian, à is made via option °letter to the left of z", then a. But it may not work in passwords.

You are right, I've access to this device, and no login issue.

Should I start a new thread?

Indeed, I think you can reproduce this bug, by trying to type in the é (or à or whatever accentuated char) in a WiFi hotspot input. You can even try to copy / paste, it won't work. No need to press enter, you will see you just cannot write this kind of char in that input.

I suspect a hard coded limitation in the Catalina product in some input fields (like login or WiFi password).

Getting a wrong sound is very odd. Have to consulted with your corporate IT about what could be causing this? They should perhaps be able to check what is being transmitted by your machine instead of é.

Are you hitting the é key to do this? Have you tried press/hold on the e and selecting é from the popup menu there?

Hi there,

similar issue here, I just received my macbook pro with Catalina OS 10.15.5, configured with the French keyboard layout.

My corporate WiFi password has the "é" char to type in, and I cannot write it (a "wrong" sound is playing while typing in this char).

To be noticed:

  • It works when typing in "é" in the Google Chrome search bar, or even Finder.
  • Linux, Android and Windows devices can successfully connect with this WiFi SSID which password contains "é".

Thank you,

Sorry, but I have no access to the only place where you have the problem, namely your wifi password input field,

The Original Poster in this thread has a problem with his Mac password, which probably indicates that somehow his input source got switched. I assume you have no problem accessing your Mac, just the wifi router, right?

I don't know of any way to figure this out without some help from the folks running that wifi.
