How do i assign a device to my child's apple id

I have 2 separate iPads for the kids that are registered to my apple ID. I just created apple ID child accounts for them and would like to assign each child to a device so I can manage their screen time. Do I need to wipe clean the iPads and set them up like new using each of their new apple id's?
