I am new to Apple TV and when I signed up it was free for a year. Now when I go to choose something to watch everything seems to offer the choice of rent or buy. What was the free service I was given for a year?

Free Apple TV for a year. Hi Everyone, I recently purchased an Apple iPhone and it came with Free Apple TV subscription for a year. I accepted the offer and now receive the service via my Apple TV box, but I do not understand how the service is free?
