Watch data plan with AT&T

I just purchased an Apple watch Series 5 with the cell option. My plan is with AT&T. I have 5 iPhones on this plan. When I went to add my watch I was shown that it would cost me $10 per month. That is fine. However the cost of my cell plan almost doubles. Has anyone experienced this? Make the cell option rather useless

I can tell you that it didn't happen to me or anyone I know across several carriers. How does that help you?

Only AT&T can tell you why your bill doubled. It's possible that, in order to add the Apple Watch, you need to update your older plan to a current one (I had to do that). Or, it's completely unrelated to the watch. I get that cell phone bills can be complicated to read. But, have it in front of you when you're on the phone with AT&T. Insist on going through it line by line until you understand it.

Hi Gizmo, I have an Apple Watch Series 4 with cell service from AT&T and I have not encountered this. I recall there being a one-time activation fee (in the $45 ballpark), in addition to the $10 per month charge, but that's it. Are you saying that your overall cell plan bill just doubled as a result of activating and adding the watch to your plan? Seems like you should contact AT&T mobile and ask them to explain your charges and walk you through your statement.

Good luck!

The only idea I have is that maybe the cell plan you had did not support the Apple Watch, and AT&T reserves a more expensive play for Apple Watch usage. When you sign-up, they trigger to switch to the more expensive plan.

AGAIN, this is a guess, as I do not use AT&T and do not know what their multi-device plans offer and if there are limitations as to which plans will support the Apple Watch.

The other possibility is that person talked to about this initial activation is getting a bonus for up-selling customers to more expensive plans. cynical, I know.
