How do I re-download gmail to Mail within date range?

My Mac mail program is missing six months worth of gmail from a few years back because my old macbook pro hadn't been backed up in six months when it crashed, so when I bought a new Macbook Pro and migrated the six-month old back-up, six months' worth of previously downloaded gmail messages that hadn't been backed up were not there to be copied over. The messages are all still on the gmail server, I just don't know how to easily re-download those messages to Mail without enabling POP for all mail; I don't want to re-download every message in my gmail, just a specific six month range.
