Tabs disappeared on iPad

I was looking at an email and touched on the page too long and it opened in a tab on Safari and all the many others were gone. I found some in History, but how and why does this happen?

Oh my gosh! I just posted this, went back to the tabs and they’re all there! I’m SO CONFUSED! Help!

By doing this you opened a new safari window. You can still get all you tabs back though by holding down on safari and selecting show all windows. From there you can either choose which window you want or you can press Reopen closed window in the top right if your old window is not there.

You may find this article to be helpful in understanding some of the frequent difficulties encountered by users new to iPadOS Safari - along with some of Safari’s more esoteric features and quirks:

Insofar as possible, I hope to have distilled most of the frequent problems reported here - and documented procedures, strategies [and where needed] some useful workarounds.

I that you find this to be helpful in resolving any issues that you may be experiencing.
