iCloud Photos does not sync to Photo Library located in my External Drive

Hi there, I recently started paying for iCloud storage with the intention to have a backup of all my Photos. I have a Macbook Air mid 2012 Catalina (10.15.6) with 256GB hard drive, not enough for my +60,000 photos that I have been accumulating along my life. Since a long time ago, I have been using an external drive as the location of my Photo Library. The external drive is a WD My Passport formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The library is assigned as System Photo Library and iCloud Photos activated as shown in the images.

But the problem is that iCloud does not sync at all. I am stuck and now thinking in deactivating iCloud Service. Does anyone has a solution for this problem?

When I called Apple Support, they told me that it was not possible to have the Photo Library in an external drive connected to iCloud. So they took me through to the process of backing up the Photo Library as a file in iCloud Drive (which is different from iCloud Photo). But since the file was so huge, the process could not get through. So, there was no solution for my request.

So I decided to try another way. 1) I exported all the pictures from the Photo Library to a new folder in the External Drive. 2) I created a new Photo Library in the local Mac, 3) I made this new Photo Library the System Photo Library, and 4) I moved it to the External Drive. 5) I deleted the newly created photo Library in the Mac and later 5) I assigned the Photo Library in the External Drive as the System Photo Library and deleted the Photo Library in the local Mac 6) I connected the Photo Library in the External Drive to iCloud. It worked. So, this Photo Library, we could say, is a fresh file with no strings attached and no bugs. 7) Finally, all the pictures I exported initially were imported to the System Photo Library.

As an additional step I created an Alias in the ....user/pictures/ directory heading towards the System Photo Library located in the External Drive.

Please dont’t forget that iCloud is a sync service. This means that you can see your photo’s on all your devices, but it means also that if you delete a photo somewhere, it will be deleted everywhere. ICloud is not meant to be used as a backup service for photos

So, if you want to have a save backup, use TimeMachine (that’s already on your Mac). You can include an external drive in TimeMachine backup ( I.m doing this for years now)

I’m not sure about the alias you created. For which purpose did you do that? How much storagespace does it take?
