How do I get my mac to recognize a new external hard drive -- I have tried connecting it, and it will not show up

I am trying to back up my computer and have a new external hard drive, but when I connect it to my macbook, the drive does not automatically show up.

MacBook Pro 15”, macOS 10.15

Launch Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, is the drive there? If so, erase it (format as APFS / GUID assuming you're on OS 10.13 or later).
