In the past there was a file of unidentified faces in the people pane in photos. I Don't know how itv works now. I just obtained a picture of my Grandmother who dies in 1939. There is no other picture in the photo file. How can I name the face and put it in my favorites?

Which system version do you have installed on your Mac?
In Photos 5 on Catalina you can show an album with all automatically named faces, that have not yet a name assigned.
Create a smart album (File > New smart album). Then set the rule to "Person is " and leave the name field empty.
Click on the photo to open it in the full size mode. Now use the key combination of ⌘ + i to bring up the Info pane for that image. In the Info pane there's a Add Faces button that you click on. The face circle appears on the image where you can resize it and place over the face. Under it is the name field to be filled in.
