Deleting downloads after saving the files to a folder on Desktop

Hi All! I'm running out of space on my disk and literally have thousands of downloads. The important ones I have saved to a file on my desktop. Is it safe to delete the downloaded files without deleting those I have saved to my desktop? Also, what about deleting .DMG files for Applications like Microsoft Word etc. Shall I keep those?
