Bootcamp Windows not working with Apple Thunderbolt TB1/2-to-TB3 adapter connected to TB3 display

I have a early 2013 Macbook Pro running macOS Catalina and Bootcamp Windows 10 Pro. I am using a genuine Apple Thunderbolt TB1/2-to-TB3 adapter to connect my Macbook Pro to a TB3 display. The display works great when running Catalina but it does not work at all when running Win 10 Pro. I know that the TB port is not hot-swappable in Windows; I have it connected to the display at start-up but it still does not work. The laptop does not recognize that the display is attached.

I believe it should be technically possible because it works when running macOS. I assume that the only difference is the Thunderbolt driver. The driver installed is provided by Apple, version 5.1.4.0, dated 2/23/2015.

  • Is there a more recent driver that I can try?
  • Is anyone using the Apple adapter in a similar manner? If so, can you tell me which driver version you are using?
  • Should I roll back to an older driver?
  • Other thoughts?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro
