disk not ejected properly error message

I make iMovies for Youtube videos. Every day I transfer photos/videos from my canon dslr camera via an SD card into my iMac running High Sierra 10.13.6, then trash them off the SD card and have not had a problem until yesterday. Each time I transfer my photos/videos onto my hard drive, right click on the SD card icon to eject the card, the windows close and I take out the SD card. When coming back to the computer after it sleeps, I get an error message saying that the "disk was not ejected properly". I am assuming it was the SD card since that's the only thing touched.

Why is this? Do I need to reformat my SD card each time? I read somewhere that somebody said that a drive is operating in "failure" mode when this message comes up. What is that?

If this continues to happen, then you need to determine what caused the error message. If it was the SD card, then it's possible the SD card needs to be replaced. Other possibilities would be dirty edge-card connectors that need cleaning or the card was removed before it was ejected fully or the card was not fully inserted or it was not the SD card but another connected drive.

Thanks Kappy! I will clean the edge of the SD card. It's relatively new and the best one I have....not sure about the "inserted fully "or not.....since I do this every day, and it just started happenning, I'll focus on that too. I do have a new (not even a month) external hard drive that I'm using for storage of photos and video files so the Mac doesn't get completely loaded up. It's a little western Digital Passport and it's always connected into the back of the imac since I got it from Amazon. Should I be ejecting that after each session, or is it ok to just leave it connected?

thanks so much for your advice.
