iPhone 8 black screen on video calls

Since past couple of weeks, I have encountered an issue with my iPhone 8, where the screen goes black (as if camera is being blocked by something).

Device: iPhone 8

iOS: 13.6

Issue:

When I make a call to someone and they answer it, I can see their video but they see a black screen from my side.

Same situation when I receive the call too.

See screenshot attached.

Affected applications:

Facetime

WhatsApp

Google meet

Fixes attempted:

  • multiple restarts (with 1 min delay, 2 min delay and so on)
  • for each of the affected apps, checked camera permissions, toggled between off & on multiple times
  • checked for newer version of iOS, but none found, device already up-to date
  • switched between Mobile Data and Wi-fi and tried making calls when the other one network was disabled. Both Mobile data and Wi-Fi are high speed connections (easily 36 Mbps at all times).

Hello TheyCallMeGuns,

We understand that the video is black on your end when using certain apps on iPhone. We're happy to help!

Try the steps provided in the article below for help with the camera.

If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working

Do you happen to have a case on your phone? If so, try removing the case and test the apps that the video isn't working in.
