Which volumes to run Disk First Aid on?

In Disk Utility, if View>Show All Devices is selected, there are four possible volumes that Disk First Aid can run on:

.. but if View>Show Only Volumes is selected, there are only two:

To check all directory structures on the drive:

  • Which ones should First Aid run on?
  • What's the difference between them?
  • If I run it on the Container Disk, does that automatically check Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data?

Thank you.

"Data" is the read / write volume that stores User data. It's what used to store everything including macOS, which has now been relegated to its own read-only volume "Macintosh HD".

This excerpt from How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility explains how to "repair" storage devices:

"After Disk Utility is done checking the volume, select the next item above it in the sidebar, then run First Aid again. Keep moving up the list, running First Aid for each volume on the disk, then each container on the disk, then finally the disk itself."

Even the word "disk" is not particularly accurate any more but that's a story for another day.

That's very useful, thank you.

I see the article recommends running First Aid on all four of the volumes (drives? partitions? sections? etc...) (and in reverse order) which is useful to know.

Logic dictates that running First Aid on the main disk (APPLE SSD SM0256L MEDIA) should check everything on that disk (including the container and two volumes) but clearly this is not the case.
