What does "x" mean in menubar network indicator?

Notice the second icon from the right. (This is a screenshot of the extreme top right of the Finder screen.) That's supposed to be my network indicator. I've done something to make the "x" appear where bars usually appear and I can't get on any network. What might I do to repair the situation? Thanks.

Hi,

Check your WiFi module( I suppose this is a hardware related issue) with following utilities if they report something.
