I just installed audacity. When I try to open it, I get the message that it needs to be updated, what do I do?
MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15
Right/control click on the icon and chose "Open" from the drop down menu.
Make sure you have version 2.4.2.0.
Update it?

I did as dialabrain suggested and made sure I had the 2.4.2.0 version, but still won't let me open it.

What do you mean what do you do?
Software packages are distrubuted by the developer. They create a change/update. You install the distributed package and then when told to do so you install the update to the package.
