I have 2 Apple IDs. I'm trying to eliminate the old one (still has subsciptions) and "move" things to my new Apple ID. I have had no luck trying to change the old email address to the "new" email address, it won't work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can't merge Apple IDs. The best you will be able to do is to set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them. See:
