Blu Ray disc not recognized

I am running a MacPro (Late 2013) with MacOS Catalina (10.15.5).

I have bought an external Blu-Ray drive ASUS BW-12D1S-U to play Blu-Rays. But no matter what I do, the Mac doesn't recognize the Blu-Ray disc: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

So after some online search, I bought a Blu-Ray Player App (Videosolo Blu-Ray Player). But I still get the same message.

The only app that recognizes the disc is MakeMKV. But neither the Mac itself nor any other app recognizes the Blu-Ray disc.

Can somebody help me?

I just found the solution. The sequence of how you do things seems to be important:

start up Mac
open Blu-Ray player app
And only now start up Blu-Ray drive
Now the app asks if it can have access to the external drive, click yes and it works

I always had the Blu-Ray drive on and it wasn't working. As soon as I turned it off and on again (classic) it worked.

That's normal. Disk Utility doesn't show empty opticals drives.

If this is a new and recently purchased drive, I'd return it as defective. While you can easily find negative reviews on literally any product, there are many negative reviews I've seen for this model. I wouldn't want to swap it for a replacement of the same drive. Return it for a refund and get something else.

Other World Computing always sells quality products. They have a couple of external Blu-ray drives.

Does that System Report you posted tell what the capabilities of the drive are?

With a disc in place, it should show supported formats, etc.

That should be supporting DRM.

Have you tried a BluRay/DVD/CD lens cleaner?

No, it just lists the drive, when a disc is in it (sorry, it's all in German, but you'll get the picture)

That's all there is. I can't do anything with it and as soon as I eject the disc, this entry is gone.

Could it be a problem with DRM? But I should at least be able to watch the disc even with DRM, right?

You can only watch commercial discs if your DISPLAY supports DRM.

Thanks for the answer. Here's the GPU info. Don't know if that helps.

The disc utility shows me the BD drive and how much capacity the disc has. But nothing else. Under the name of the bd drive it says: Not initialized.

the specs posted online suggest it may require a certain graphics card. That GPU may be required for encoding/decoding.

What graphics card are you using?

directions say to check for the drive showing up as empty drive is Disk Utility as a prerequisite.

Haven't tried that. But since other apps (MakeMKV) can read the disc I don't think that could be the issue. I can try anyway.
