What are the limiting components of a mid 2010 iMac with 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 memory in not being able to move from El Capitan to Catalina or Mojave?
iMac 27″, OS X 10.11
The lack of Metal compatible GPU will prevent installing Mojave or Catalina all together officially.
Also 4GB or RAM is not enough to support Catalina, at least 8GB would be recommended.
But the update process will not allow you to install Mojave or Catalina in any way on that machine so it is irrelevant.
Thank you. Can you help me a little further? Would the absence of Metal Graphics prevent me from using Mojave or Catalina altogether, or does it just degrade the graphics experience?
Thank you very much. This is very clear. Luckily, (mainly) I have solved my initial problem(with iMovie) by installing High Sierra.
Primarily the lack of Metal Graphics support.
