Recording in GarageBand with AirPods Pro

I have seen this question asked several times but never seen a definitive answer to whether AirPods or any other bluetooth headset can be used to record in GarageBand. It seems the answer is they cannot. I have followed every suggested step. The AirPods can be selected as an input in GarageBand but the gain control for the track will always be grayed out. They can only be used as a monitor. If anyone has ever found a work-around or even documentation from Apple about this limitation, please share.
