Need help pairing iPhone 6 to iWatch series 1.

I have cleared all contents and settings on watch. iPhone is running iOS 12.4.8, all up to date. I select Pair Watch in the app, scan the galaxy looking code, it pairs momentarily, but then immediately unpairs, with a blink of a message that the phone needs update. I have rebooted both devices and both are fully charged.

If the watch is running watchOS6 then you need a phone that is running ios13 or higher,your iphone 6 will only update to ios12.
