I am wondering if anyone has had any success with connecting an iPad with lightning connection to an older 24 inch Apple Cinema Display with mini display ports. I can't find an adapter for that.

Yes, but that those require the monitor to have an HDMI port or VGA port. The LCD 24 inch apple display doesn't have those.
