This is because your iPhone is locked to the carrier that is providing service to your primary phone line. You are probably attempting to activate an eSIM which is from another carrier. For your eSIM to work, if it is from a different carrier, you will need to contact your original service provider and ask them to unlock your iPhone.

You may have an iPhone that was meant to be sold in China, HK and Macau...... That iPhone does not have eSIM capability however has DUAL Physical SIM capability whereby it uses TWO Physical SIMs. Both SIM cards fit on the same SIM card tray. One in the FRONT and one in the BACK of the SIM card tray.
Under your Mobile data tab, do you seen any reference to a BACK SIM? If YES then you have the iPhone mentioned above.

Talk to your carrier. They manage an esim if they support it.
If you have an iPhone that accepts dual physical SIM cards (sold in China, Hong Kong, and Macau), there is no eSIM in your phone.
Then you have the same setup as I do. An iPhone that was purchased SIM Free and unlocked. I have two working lines as well. Both from different providers and working perfectly fine.
For your issue with the eSIM that you are having difficulty with activation, I recommend that you contact the support team for that provider and ask about the bar code scan and the error. They should be able to solve it for you. Thanks.

Thank you for your response it’s actually not locked to any network as I have tried three different networks On it, it’s a sim free iPhone and it works perfectly with multiple carriers and the esim I tried was from the same provider with the sim presently in the phone
Will try that but my problem is my iPhone doesn’t have the add mobile data button on the mobile data tab don’t know why that is😓 I had to just scan the bar code with my camera and what I get is “mobile plan cannot be set up; esim installation is unsupported on your device”
me too
