iPad pencil not connecting to iPad air

I have the newest iPad Air and the 1st generation iPad pencil and it is not connecting to my iPad. I tried plugging it in and restarting, nothing has worked.

As your have an iPad Air3, it is essential that you update your iPad to iPadOS 13.6 (current).

iPadOS 13.5.1 has a known issue that interferes with pairing and operation of Apple Pencil with the Air3. Update to iPadOS 13.6 resolves the problem.

There is a known issue when connecting an Ipad Air 3rd Generation and 1st Generation Pencil. The way to resolve the issue is to connect and disconnect power to the iPad then connect the pencil via the lightning port and this should start the pairing request. I have confirmed it worked for me.
