Is my Macbook Pro running too hot?

Hi all,

I have the Macbook Pro 13 2020 with 10th-gen Intel processor, and recently I noticed my computer temperature hits 50C~ when I'm just typing away in IntelliJ. (edit: I can also feel the heat quite clearly as I'm typing)

Is this normal temperatures? I've only recently started monitoring the temperatures, so I'm not sure what temps it was giving before.

Thanks,

I see, that's usually not the case for me as I don't utilize the laptop under that heavy load.

It was quite shocking at first, since usually my tasks would be web-surfing, YouTube videos, and programming (strictly typing, omitting the variations that come with compiling/running applications).

Videos are not always light loads especially an HD video. And web surfing can be a heavy load due to all the ads & JavaScript running on a page especially if you have multiple windows/tabs open or you are using a Chrome based browser which is notorious for high CPU utilization especially with some of the recent builds.

You can always run the Apple Diagnostics to check the cooling system is functioning normally. If you have high CPU utilization or slow system performance, then you can always look for software issues by running EtreCheck and posting the report here. I don't think your laptop has any issues at the moment.

CPU core temps can jump very quickly doing even the most mundane tasks since the CPU goes from a base speed of 800MHz at idle to 2+GHz for other tasks. The Apple laptops try to maintain temps at or below 70C as much as possible. For more intensive tasks CPU temps can go to 90C to 100C. If the fan(s) run at high speed and the CPU temp goes over about 100C, the CPU itself will throttle the CPU speed back to 800MHz until the temps drop below the critical temperature.
