You missed a step.
Please follow the instructions in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306 in order to place your iPad in Recovery Mode. Then iTunes will recognize your device.

If your iPad is disabled, or you have forgotten your iPad passcode, you’ll need to follow this process:

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Use of a PC or Mac is unavoidable. If your iPad is not recognised, this support page may be helpful in tracing the problem:
