I want to create a short movie/slide show for my best friends birthday but when I try and open iMovie on my lap top I get this notification: "You can’t open the application “iMovie” because it may be damaged or incomplete." How do I fix this?

Assuming that you are talking about iMovie 10, redownload iMovie 10. Drag the iMovie app from your applications folder into the trash, but don’t empty the trash. Then sign into the online app store. Your purchases will be displayed, including iMovie. Redownload it from there.
