Operating systems upgrade

I have an IMAC running on X Yosemite. How can I change to a higher operating software? Sierra and above? Going into updates does not show me any available upgrade to this. Please advise. Thanks.

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.10

See if you can upgrade to 10.11, 10.12, 10.13, or 10.14, see sys requirements...

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, download High Sierra or Catalina. These are full-version upgrades and won't appear in the Updates list.

It says late 2013 model OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 and says that there are no upgrade compatible!!! I am not able to run many software necessary for work due to this. Why would Apple not allow compatibility to be able to upgrade???
