Upgrade to current operating system

I have an IMac late 2007 Desktop with Sierra 10.12.6 as the operating system. What is the best way to upgrade the operating system so it can eventually get Big Sur?

iMac, macOS 10.12

A 2007 iMac won't be running Sierra.

The maximum OS for a late 2009 through 2011 iMac is High Sierra.

The maximum OS for a 2012 or 2013 iMac is Catalina.

The maximum OS for a 2014 or newer iMac is currently Big Sur.

In any case, you can upgrade directly to the latest compatible version from 10.9 or newer.
