AppleCare for new, unopened iPhone purchased from Verizon

I have 2 new iPhones that are still in the box. When I try to purchase AppleCare for either of these phones, I get an error message "It looks like your device isn’t eligible for an AppleCare agreement." Can AppleCare only be added to apple products purchased directly from Apple?

Thanks

Typically if you purchase a phone directly from a cellular provider they would go through the activation process with you. I find it a bit unusual that they would sell you a phone in an unopened box without doing so.

You're assuming someone actually walked into a Verizon store and bought a phone... These days, that's far less likely than ordering it from them online and having it delivered, or even doing a drive by pickup without ever interacting with the staff at the store.
