What is recommended by macOS - Right-Click on an item. and see what is shown for "Open With..."

B. CD-R vs. Music CD-R

There are CD-Rs and then there are Music CD-Rs. So, if you want to play music, then maybe you need to burn all of this to a Music CD-R or maybe the other way around. Find these at your local retailer, and user another computer to burn these to the CD.

C. Try a Different External Drive:

Have another external drive to try(Apple or Not)?- If so, try it, and see if it runs.

To Start Over with a New User Account:

1. Login: As an Administrator
2. Save: Your files to an external device
3. Create: an Administrator Account
4. Log Out: of the current user
5. Log in: to the new Administrator
6. Try: These Files

You should be set from there.
