Free up space on my Apple Watch 3

I have an Apple Watch 3. I keep getting a message that there is not room to update and I need to free up space. I have searched on line and have followed the directions to delete apps through the app on my phone and directions to delete apps directly from the watch. None of them seem to work. There is suppose to be an option to uninstall an app. None of them seem to arrive at the switch to turn off the app?
