iPad Pro 12.9 2020, external HD?

Just bought an iPad Pro, and tried to connect my external up to edit some videos or try to. But it wasn’t recognizing none of my 3 external HD’s. Is there a way to get it to recognize or do I need to buy an Apple specific hard drive for this?

Why won't my iPad show my external drive in Files? Historically, I've been able to connect my external drive to my iPad and browse the stored files under the Files app. More recently whenever I connect it I can see that the drive is powered on but I can't access anything on my iPad. Why did it suddenly stop working? I've never formatted it for a PC and as far as I know it still connects to macbooks.

iPad will pick up thumb drive but not external hard drive I recently discovered that I can connect my external hard drive to my iPad. I bought the connector and it works fine when I put a thumb drive into it. However when I put an external hard drive into it I can’t see it in Files. I’ve followed the various online articles - power cable connected, formatted to ex-FAT, etc, but still nothing comes up. I’ve updated to iOS 14 also. Any ideas why I still can pick up my hard drive? It’s the same scenario on my iPhone also. The hard drive is brand new.

What kind(s) of external HDs?

Direct USB-C or with an adapter?

External power supply or bus-powered? What power load?

How formatted (HFS, APFS, FAT, ExFAT, NTFS)?

Are you viewing it with the Files app or some other app?

Are you running iPadOS 13?
