Since 2012 it is nothing more than an alias to your iCloud email account, and a synonymous login ID for your AppleID used with iCloud.

I have always used a third party email for my AppleID. But that is also the AppleID I used with MobileMe, and later with iCloud, so I can login to my AppleID with any of my third party email address, my iCloud email address, or my @me.com email address - all 3 login to the exact same AppleID and thus the exact same iCloud account. My @me.com address is also usable (as an iCloud email address alias) as a “reachable at” address with FaceTime and iMessage.

It can be both, but it is mainly an iCloud email account.

You are welcome. You can't remove/change @iCloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com aliases.

Hi—thanks for your reply. If that’s the case then why do I have a 2nd iCloud.com attached to the @me? In my settings for iOS 13 I can’t delete the iCloud or the @me because it says it’s my Apple ID. Hope that makes sense.
