Why am I told I restart to install "these updates", when I have no pending updates?

It's enough of pain to get notifications asking if I want to install "these updates", without of course, giving me the slightest idea what updates it's referring to. So of course, I then open the App Store, to see what apps are ready to update.

However, today it's asking me if I want to restart my computer, to install updates. So I went to the App Store and it tells me all my apps are up to date! So now what? And why is this notification even there at all?

Hi there Saxman,

We see that you are having issues with software update notifications being stuck on your Mac. You have come to the right place to receive assistance with this.

First, you should verify where the updates need to to be completed. The Mac can either require a software up for the macOS or an update for your apps located on the Mac.

To check to make sure there are no software updates, check out this resource: How to update the software on your Mac

To check for available updates for applications on the Mac, check out this resource: Update apps or use automatic downloads

If you are still receiving these notifications after checking the resources, you may want to consider restarting your Mac.

Take care!
